Your description of this book reminds me of one of W.E.B. Griffin's milfic books (probably The Lieutenants), where the commander of a German POW camp gives photos of the Katyn Forest massacre to one of the POWs to make sure that the information isn't suppressed. The commander is very emphatic that German soldiers would never commit that sort of atrocity. And there is not one iota of irony in the book -- it's totally compartmentalized from the atrocities of the Holocaust.
