Doctorow quote
Jul. 7th, 2003 08:29 amI was trying to remember this quote for
matociquala last night, and got it maybe half-correct. However, I'm clearly not alone in that, so I don't feel too terrible about it.
So, the quote about creativity and headlights goes something like this:
Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.
--according to this site.
All I can say is that it's like driving a car at night. You can only see as far as your headlights extend, but you can make the whole trip that way.
--and from this site
It's like driving a car at night. You never see further than your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.
--and from this one.
The third seems to be the most popular form, but since no one bothers to mention where or when Doctorow said that, and since there is no official Doctorow website, your guess is as good as mine as to which is actually what the man said.
(And if anybody out there doesn't have to guess about it, please please please give me the correct version and the citation. Because this is frankly a little embarrassing.)
[Okay, was I dreaming the part where I posted the addendum that
emstardust had found quote and citation? Or has the electronic cousin of Mercer Mayer's Yalapapus just eaten that bit? --Ed.]
