I feel like crap AND I'm bored.

They reinforce each other of course. I'm bored because I feel too awful to do anything that requires more than half a teaspoon worth of brain. Probably I should go take a nap.

Thank you to everybody who's responded to my Nine Tailors query. We seem to be moving toward a consensus on religion (including the question of "guilt"), the numinous, and the unheimlich (esp. the bells) as a topic, and I'm totally cool with that. When head feels less like tupperware stuffed with sawdust, I'll try to collect myself for a post.

Why is it "numinous" when the Latin is numen? Nobody has to answer that.

Ditto on the "like crap." Man, prescription dose is supposed to mean No Pain. If it didn't hurt to open my mouth too far, I'd yell some World War One-appropriate curses right here in the office.

You should take a nap. It's a better option than home trepanning.

You ask C.S. Lewis. When he nicked the idea of "Numenor" from Tolkien for THS he decided to write "Not even in Numinor was it heard in the streets".

Actually, owing to a slightly strange Latin education, I always thought "numen" meant "yellow" until today.

So I can blame it on Lewis, then? Good. Always satisfying to have someone to blame, even unjustly. :)

And the nap did sort of help ... until I was fool enough to get up again. I'm thinking this is some kind of virus and feeling sulky and self-pitying in consequence.

I'm sorry your jaw still hurts--I hope it is the thing the dentist said it probably was, and that you start feeling better soon.

Because the English derivative is formed from the stem of the genitive, and it's a third declension neuter noun, so it goes numen, numinis. Like nomen, nominis, from which nominal etcetera.

Aw, and here I was just going to say, "Because someone couldn't spell?"

Thank you.

That makes sense, and may help me in future remember how to spell English "numinous" as well as Latin numen. And that would be a good thing.

Some days I love LiveJournal, and this is one of them.
