Movie: Say Anything
Oct. 2nd, 2003 10:04 pmWatched tonight, to escape from dis. Quite liked it. Have a thought, which is a spoiler.
Also spoilers for 10 Things I Hate About You.
What I like about Say Anything (aside from John Cusack, who goes without saying) is the fact that it and Lloyd are both absolutely comfortable with the idea that Diane is smarter and more high-powered than he is.
Also the fact that Diane's father, while not a good guy, is fully three-dimensional. For some bizarre reason (perhaps because they're both set in Seattle?) I kept comparing Say Anything to 10 Things I Hate About You, which also features high-powered girl and guy content to play second fiddle. Now 10 Things, with the Shakespeare and with the broader comedy, is doing completely different things, but the fact is that Kat and Bianca's father is simply a traditional comedic blocking figure, whereas Diane's father, though equally a blocking figure (if not more so), is a person with his own motivations, his own story, and his own (fucked-up) psychology. They could have made him an out-and-out Black Hat villain, and they didn't. And I like the movie for that.
It's a very very 80s movie, but it carries itself well.
Headachy. Dis looming. Going to bed.
