Okay, sorry about the Subject line.

Previous DLS posts: Concerning Lord Peter Wimsey, the Hon. Freddy Arbuthnot, Miss Katharine Alexandra Climpson, Whose Body?, Clouds of Witness, Unnatural Death, The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club 1, The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club 2, Strong Poison, The Five Red Herrings, Have His Carcase 1, Have His Carcase 2, Have His Carcase 3, Have His Carcase 4, Have His Carcase 5, Have His Carcase 6, Have His Carcase 7, Murder Must Advertise.

The discussion of Have His Carcase spun off two ideas for series-spanning posts (there's a better word for that, but I'm not going to think of it at this hour of the morning): one on the media, and one on music. I've decided to use those two posts as a kind of buffer between Murder Must Advertise and The Nine Tailors; I love The Nine Tailors, but I always have to psych myself up for it.

So this post will contain indiscriminate spoilers for (potentially) all the Wimsey stories, and a crucial plot point for The Nine Tailors.

I blame it on [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh.

220 song lyrics from the 80s

I identified 50 correctly; recognized 32 more, but either goofed on the identification, could only think of the title, or could hear the song in my head without being able to place it; and there were 14 that when I checked my answers, I felt really stupid for not recognizing, either because I heard the song WAY too often as a teenager or because I still have and listen to the album.

I don't believe the quiz-maker's assertion that the "average person should be at least familiar with almost all of the songs, if he/she owned a radio in the 80's," but I am torn between embarrassment that I fully identified less than a quarter of the list and embarrassment that some of the identifications were so automatic. I had really terrible taste in music in the 80s.

Do you want to know how bad? Really? )

I was warped as a small child; I actually rather like this sort of test.

Most of it seems relatively accurate, except that my creativity is apparently entirely unfounded. :) I'm not worried.

Do ya WANT the gory details? )

I have just discovered a remarkably compelling reason for writing my dissertation the way I have (completing my argument first, and then going back and adding the secondary sources one by one): I can NEVER remember which critic said what. I need a particular quote about Hamlet and Gertrude, and I have no idea of who said it. This is no big deal; I've only incorporated three critics into my Hamlet chapter thus far. But what if I'd done all the reading first, the way you're "supposed" to? I'd be completely up the creek. And note-taking wouldn't have saved me, because (a.) I take lousy notes. Always have. And (b.) I wouldn't have written this quote down anyway, because I only this moment recognized that it is relevant to my argument in any way at all. I do that a lot, too.

So suddenly my system makes sense.

That's a good feeling.

Excelsior!

Have just completed a close reading of Hamlet 3.4. The Hamlet chapter is now 38 pages long. I've got a little redundancy to prune, but not a whole lot. And more reading to do, of course.

But that can wait. I think I'm starting to get a feel for what "LGiA" wants to do. *crosses fingers* Maybe.
