So, the CEM (copy-edited manuscript) of Mélusine was supposed to arrive today. I knew this because my editor kindly emailed to tell me so.

I camped out on the couch in the living room, since we don't have a doorbell, and I know from experience that a knock at the front door carries to the study as a muffled thumping that might be the furnace or a cat or a noise in, you know, somebody else's house.

Got some work done (642 words, after 1,075 yesterday). At noon, got up, wandered into the foyer, noticed through the frosted glass of the front door, a white and bulky object.

The ms. Left like a foundling on the porch.

Now, okay, clearly I didn't need to sign for it, and this is a small and law-abiding town. I'm used to delivery people simply leaving things on the porch like that. But I was sitting by the front window, ears cocked, attention easily snagged, watching, and I didn't even see the guy. Didn't hear him come up on the porch. Didn't hear or see the truck.

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad it's here, glad it got here safely, glad UPS is doing its job. But what the hell, man?

UPS has now delivered several times while allanc and I were home and downstairs and near the door, and we haven't seen a truck nor a person. We open the door to discover packages.

...I think they're using ninjas. Or are testing transporter technology. I can't explain it.

I am oddly relieved to discover I'm not the only one.

Ninjas.

And they've fitted the trucks with cloaking devices. They must have.

Never mind the ninjas — how are the copy edits?

I'll get back to you on that.

No matter how hard I complained, I was never able to get our UPS guy to ring the doorbell. NOT EVEN FOR SIGNATURE-REQUIRED PACKAGES. He'd just silently deposit a thousand dollars worth of computer on the doorstep and stroll away.

At least you GOT the ms. The last time my sweetie arranged for something urgent to arrive next-day-air via UPS, we ***watched the truck*** make a U-turn in his cul-de-sac without ever stopping. UPS, when queried on the phone, claimed our package wasn't delivered because no one was home. Yes, the fur flew. (Turned out that a sub driver had been put on that route that evening, with attendant fuggups.)

So, possibly I've been watching too many spy shows and detective dramas lately, but have you package tracked on UPS's website to see exactly what time it's listed as being delivered? I'd do that, but, then, I have a pathological need to use all research tools at my disposal simply because they are there.

Those goldarn ninjas. They're just everywhere, I'm telling you.

(Poster of the above is a friend of mine. She won't mind me spreading the word about the ninjas. 'Cuz, you know, they're everywhere.)

Oh, yes, we must spread the word! Remember: Just like other mammals, ninjas can be mean OR totally awesome. (http://www.realultimatepower.net/index3.htm)

I'm not quite sure which category Stealth Ninja UPS Guys fall into.
