I think (she said cautiously) that I've found the answer to the character/world-building problem I was bitching about on Saturday.

[livejournal.com profile] shivasaavik asked in the comments if I found I had to write the nonviewpoint characters to get their motivations worked out, to which my answer was yes and no. I don't, mercifully, have to write the actual scenes, but I have found that writing out what I'm thinking is frequently the only way to get anything moving--my theory is that it gives me the illusion of a dialogue. (Actual dialogue with [livejournal.com profile] matociquala also helps greatly, but there comes a point in every problem-solving process where it's really just down to me and my backbrain, two falls out of three.) This time, it manifested in the form of a Q&A session--and devolved slighlty into a press conference, with the reporters heckling the poor spokesperson and asking three questions at once.

But like I said, I think it worked.
