Got 'em yesterday.
They solve the problem of being unable to read with glasses on, but introduce a whole exciting host of new problems, the principal one being that, apparently, when moving I don't look up, or even straight ahead. I look down. And I'm over-correcting now by not merely looking in a more upward direction but by raising my eyebrows into a frown, as if my eyeballs need to be winched up or something. I imagine this foolishness will resolve as I get more used to the new regime, but just at the moment I'm giving myself headaches and feeling generally a little visually disoriented.
The bifocals are, I think, going to turn out to be the right decision, but I've got to get the new protocols to compile first.
