Like any other genre, literary criticism is at the mercy of the quality of its authors. Certainly, some litcrit is self-indulgent and deliberately impenetrable, but that's just Sturgeon's Law. Ninety percent of everything is crap.
And I wouldn't say I'm trying to find some wisdom about the human condition. All I'm doing is saying, Ooh, shiny! Look at this pattern I've found!
