It's very easy, inside academia, to lose any and all sense of perspective. It's not necessarily that people don't acknowledge there's very little at stake--it's that they genuinely don't recognize it. Which means, of course, that to them there's a lot at stake.

What looks important depends to a great extent on where you're standing.
