The only problem with that theory (which is lovely), is that popular music was hardly an invention of the twentieth century. It coexisted with poetry for centuries, and probably more people were listening to/singing popular music than ever considered poetry at all.
I suspect the difference is that popular songs ceased to be ephemera with the advent of technologies for recording sound. So it's been preserved.
