Quilts aren't far from Amish hex-medallions, and could conceivably be used in similar ways. Historically, every block had a symbolic meaning, rather as the Victorians could deliver a cutting social put-down with a well-chosen three-flower nosegay.

Also, Card's Seventh Son world fascinates the crap out of me.
