I was talking to an elderly German man once (he was in his seventies and I was a young impressionable teen at the time) and this came up in discussion once. Apparently the hatred was also almost like brainwashing in the schools. He told me he remembered the classes vividly and even years after, when he knew antisemitism was wrong, he still had to fight the sense of loathing he felt whenever he saw or met a Jew.
I think that total lack of indiviual thought was the scariest part of it all.
