But then, after the horrific politics of Aliens - "Let's take an independent white female professional and contrive a plotline to get her safely into a nuclear family which she has to defend against an excessively fecund black female" - pretty much anything would be a relief.
Also, I don't regard agency exercised in destroying oneself in a situation where that is the morally right thing to do as a bad thing. [ As frex, people attempting to torture one into becoming a torturer, or an informant in ways that will lead to loss of life. ] I did not feel the situation Ripley found herself in at the end of Alein^3 was unduly contrived to get to that point, it seemed a logical and interesting outgrowth of the series premise.
