yeah, and to add to that...would it make this element of male psyche go away to just ignore it? It makes more sense to me to look at it and see how the patterns replicate over time.
And...here I get into tricky territory...are you going to say that there is no basis for some of the conflicts they have with femaleness? What about women with maleness? I'm not talking male brutality, overt sexism/violence, but with actual *maleness*. I know a lot of women that are terrified of it, even when it's not actually threatening them in any way. I know men who have been trained to think that their maleness is "bad" or somehow inherently sexist in its mere existence. I have also seen women do some pretty horrific things to their sons due to ambivalent/fearful/angry feelings they have towards men/maleness. You can blame those women's reactions on sexism and/or abuse, sure, and many times you'd be right...but after a certain point personal responsibility has to matter, too.
And if a filmmaker's/author's biases come out in the course of making a project, that probably just means we're seeing them in their true form. I think that's how a society moves forward, is through reflections of that kind.
