This is probably not what the people who tell beginning writers to "Write what you know!" had in mind, but I am worldbuilding via bookstore trawling.

Felix thinks he's died and gone to heaven.

This sounds like so much fun. Tell me there are frivolous and scandalous books in there with the more scholarly works.

Assuming he manages to live that long, Felix is really going to hate finding out about presbyopia.

Hopefully he won't have to pay for his fun later...Felix! Books! What a happy image!

But the man on the Melusine-cover (my keyboard's old and decrepit and that's why I can't use accents) is by himself and half-looking out of the picture. So in a way he's addressing the viewer, so you know he's involved in an important way. If it really was an H.-cover, the man would just be an accoutrement slash Marble Column to a spineless (swooning) woman.

The woman with the candle (Mehitabel, perhaps?) is also on her own. As is the figure depicting Mildmay on the cover of The Virtu. There is no suggestion of dependence, if this makes any sense. And therefore in my opinion does not refer to a Bodice Ripper.

He will wear a monocle and look very elegant.
