Although, at the same time, I still see terms like "thumping" and "pounding" in the newspapers in the context of descriptions of military actions, to refer to (when you get down to it) the deaths of large numbers of people. I expect the military usage has the same purpose/effect as the domestic one, namely to downgrade the seriousness involved. So yes, we have come a long way in the last 40 or so years, but we (homo sapiens collective we) aren't grownups yet.

I see the Vickers story was first published during the War, too. Hum.
