Actually, thanks to the development of the bar/nightclub scene in that area (Vine over to the Chinese, plus the blocks down to Sunset and up to Franklin), lots of locals are taking cabs there now, at least locals who live on the East side or in West Hollywood, etc. (that is, the areas within a relatively close proximity).

Hmm, I live on the east side and I don't know anybody who uses cabs. Maybe my friends and I are a little too far east (Silver Lake/Echo Park) for it to be affordable.

It's not so much that cabs are expensive relative to other cities in terms of the actual *rates*, it's that the mileage covered is so much greater.
