I went to bed last night with a headache, and it was still there when I woke up. It has, in fact, persisted all day--although I think it's easing off some--meaning that today has been (a.) less productive and (b.) less pleasant than I had hoped.

However, comma, my general state of decrepitude and despond has been alleviated by two things:

1. The most fabulous [livejournal.com profile] fidelioscabinet sent me porcupine quill hairsticks, which are both the platonic ideal of awesome and also useful.

2. The Bone Key is a finalist for the first annual Shirley Jackson Awards. I am pleased about this not merely for the obvious reasons, but also because I think it's incredibly cool that Shirley Jackson is being memorialized in this way. The Haunting of Hill House is one of the most elegantly terrifying books I have ever read.

If you have good things you would like to share, I'd love to hear about them.

Congratulations!

I actually just finished The Bone Key last night, and I really liked it. Horror was my first true love as a reader, and your stories got under my skin in the very best, creepiest, most discomfiting of ways. I had a very difficult time falling asleep the other night. I very much enjoyed reading the book and was sorry when it was over. Thank you for writing it!

My good thing is this: I found out today that I have been nominated and selected for the "Rising Stars 2008" section of the annual Super Lawyers of Michigan publication.

Congratulations! I just finished reading The Bone Key, and loved it (http://nayad.livejournal.com/245841.html). :)

I sat right next to you in that super-crowded prostitution (and other entertainment) panel at OddCon, but didn't manage to say hello, so I'll do it now--hello!

My friend Mary, who nearly died a year ago of a rare circulatory disorder, just called from the Mayo Clinic. She has produced no further problems, doesn't have to go back for six months, and gets to go camping again.

My other friend Kimberly just called, too. Her daughter, in her 20s, bade pretty fair to be making a mess of her life some seven or eight years ago; two marriages to really crummy men, one child. Not only is she settled down with a decent guy, but she just won a $90,000 educational scholarship!

I am not making this up, I swear! You picked a great day to ask for good news!

Congratulations! And oh, yes, I love The Haunting of Hill House so. The only book I ever read that made me literally afraid to look up from the page.

Congrats!

Good stuff: Blue Sky Creamery's strawberry ice cream. They make it with liquid nitrogen! So it tastes like strawberry ice cream should! Strawberry ice cream made without LN is just never the same.

Yay! Congrats!

Good thing: I have mutant bean and cucumber plants. They literally doubled in size from this morning to tonight. Which bodes well for my having cucumbers and beans!

Hurrah for you and The Bone Key!

New Cat (http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb266/fidelio_photos/jin%20qian%20mao/S6300482.jpg) has not just reached the point where he has no fear of the other cats and they are not upset by him, but will now get close to me if it means he can mooch pita bread and hummus (why that, out of all the other monkey food, I know not). Now if only he had a name...

I would get close for pita and hummus too. :)

Although, I might get close ANYWAY, simply b/c you are awesome.

True. Since he is just now deigning to associate with us, rather than sticking his own kind, both sides are short on data, as well.

I doubt you'd be standing with your dainty little paws on my thigh and scrabbling at the plate with one of them, all the while making baby-cat noises in the hopes this will get you fed.

I just got back from a two week celebration of my 20th wedding anniversary. My husband & I spent a magical time in Door County, & life is good.
