Oh, I'm glad you wrote this -- because I've been meaning to try to say something smart about this exceedingly smart book for months now. I just got markteppo to buy it last week, even. I am STILL recommending it all over the place; it really is intensely clever and a wonderful read.
The only thing I'd add to your assessment is a loose comment/slight argument about Clemmie being primarily a Lucy figure, in addition to whatever other role she might play.
[Edited to clarify] -- By which I don't mean I'm arguing with your assessment or anything, but I just woke up and I'm sloppy. What I mean is, the moment Clemmie appeared my first thought was, "Ah, here's Lucy." And I think that the story bore that out, though it melded her with other roles too, like almost everyone else who appears.
