That's a good question. I think it's the fact that, in the dream and then as I was thinking about it, the protagonists were all so clearly teenage girls, and it was so clearly ABOUT being teenage girls, that it had to be YA. Also, the Escape-from-Dystopia was a sub-genre in YA SF that I loved as a teenager.
