My knowledge of John Wayne's oeuvre is insufficient to answer that one, but in 1957 John Wayne told Hugh O'Brian (who was playing Wyatt Earp at the time, in The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047750/)), "I often think of Wyatt Earp when I play a film character. There's a guy who actually did what I'm trying to do [in the movies]" (Tefertiller 340). So, in a sense you could say John Wayne always played Wyatt Earp.
