NOTES: Shin splints? Really?

So dressage, like yoga, is one of those activities that enforces an acute awareness of every quirk, foible, and failing in one's personal meatware. Specifically, in this case, a tendency for my left foot to roll out and try to take all the weight on the outside edge, rather than across the ball of the foot like it's supposed to. (I think this is partly because of the position I automatically take when driving to keep my left knee out of the way of the steering column.) This leads to horrible cramps in foot, calf, and Achilles tendon, and I suspect is also contributing to the left side shin splints today. Fie upon't.

Isn't retraining your body just hellish? One of the things (just one; there are many) that I keep fighting is the too-short-for-all-chairs thing, which makes me sit crooked, and now is messing up my back.

If you recall your Castiglione, one of the reasons for all the dancing, and horse-riding and fencing was not just because these were useful skills in themselves, but because they helped ensure you'd have that perfectly balanced posture and body movements that set the aristocrat apart from everyone else. Even nowadays, extensive training like this leaves it's mark; if you watch [livejournal.com profile] texanne at Fourth Street, you can still see the effects of all her dance training,

The introspection, on top of the physical training required by the discipline is both what makes me keep going and what has lately been making me want to stop. Both at once.

If you find a solution to that chair problem, I'd love to hear it (I'm tall, but short legs + lumbar issues has the same effect).
