The horses can see through them just fine -- it's like sun glasses. They're made of mesh. But they keep the flies out of their eyes. And also protect from strong sun if you have a horse with pink around the eyes, and from blowing dust and debris.
I have the long-nosed version for my horse Surprise because she has a pink nose and the strong Arizona sun gives her a terrible sunburn otherwise.
