This is the upper left quadrant of the border, which I pieced and sewed to the main body of the quilt while listening to the Brewers get shut out AGAIN by the Astros. You will notice if you look closely that I am failing straight lines (the cat at the top has more of her back sneaker visible than the cat at the bottom). This is not a surprise--I am no good at straight lines, and I never have been; I can remember elementary school teachers being very concerned about my inability to cut in a straight line--and for this quilt I am giving myself permission not to worry about it. When I attempt a quilt with an actual pattern, then we will be stern about our geometry.

Internet helpiness alert! I can't help it, I'm a teacher who used to work in a quilt shop. If you're going to make a bed-sized quilt with a geometric pattern, a clear quilter's ruler, rotary cutter, and cutting mat will save you oodles of frustration. They sell little sandpaper dots with adhesive on the back, too--it keeps the ruler from slipping in the middle of a cut.

I have, and use, all of those things.

Oh, good. I tried doing it by hand at first, with predictable results. :-/

Failing that, you could always try using a carpenter's chalk line. Then, if you're like me, the blue line will show how just how far off you strayed when cutting.

Straying off the line? My word, I have no idea what you're talking about. (Besides, you can fix it in the piecing.)
