Me, it took me decades before I managed to perpetrate a novel. And that novel snuck up on me in disguise, pretending first that it was a novelette and then it was a novella before admitting the truth. (I had to do two more drafts just to put in all the stuff I had left out to try to keep it publishably short -- and then it was unpublishably long.)
