Those are both hugely depressing things. The thorn may well regrow: they are tough trees, those, and they fight back. I hope it does, because it was a fine thing in a lovely location. (The hill. When in Glastonbury, I have to have minders, as my mediaeval historian button gets set off so much -- [livejournal.com profile] mevennen is very tolerant.)
I share your feelings about Evil Hordes. I don't have them in my stuff, either (despite attempts by some readers of my non-fiction to persuade me into assigning that role to the Anglo-Saxons and Anglo-Normans).
