It is inevitable, apparently, in reading about crimes committed before 1900, that there will be doubts expressed about the workings of justice.

I recommend reading The Agitator (http://www.theagitator.com), which follows things currently going wrong in the American justice system. I don't know whether there's any time or place where things were better in terms of procedure.
