My friend Jonathan dedicated his dissertation to Mary Shelley and Edward G. Wood, whose explorations of science and philosophy had always been an inspiration to him, or something phrased near that. (He and Juan trained as soil scientists together. Jonathan is a real peach; I would love to introduce you two sometime, because I think you would enjoy talking to each other.)
It's in the same context as the question in my previous post, about why people might have gone to the theater and enjoyed plays while not taking the characters and actions as anything they wanted to model their lives after.
It's also one of my favorite C&H lines, which is a bonus. :)
