Missed algonquin cat. I said I was bleary.

Algonquin Cat is a children's-book-suitable-for-adults by Val Schaffner, copiously illustrated by Hilary Knight. I have loved it now for over twenty years, an honor shared only by The Wind in the Willows and Winnie-the-Pooh. And it's all about Shakespeare, too.

The Wind in the Willows is one of the best books of all time.

My heart breaks (in a good way) every time Mole can smell his house, and he and Ratty go there, and there are the carolers and the sausages and everything.

And my heart breaks (also in a good way) every time Ratty gets the urge to run off to sea, and Mole sits on him and stops him. I like that way that they each save each other from going away (Mole might well have gone back home later if Ratty hadn't seen how he felt at Christmas and given him a good memory to carry with him) and they all save Toad.

The last time I reread TWitW, I had a terrible time beating off the subtext.

Because, you know, there AREN'T any female characters (except a couple of human women), and "Wayfarers Are" reads as a romantic triangle just as easily as anything else.

Aside from the fact, you know, that these are small furry animals ... who wear clothes ... and mess about in boats ... and ...

Oh bother. I give up.

MOLE + RATTY 4EVER!!!!1! Theirloveissopureandunspokenandfurry!

I have profaned one of the innocent joys of my own childhood, and I feel okay with that.

It's set in a world where women aren't -- females, aren't -- don't get me started on trying to work out the biology, because there are children. And they have the concept of women because Toad dresses up as a washerwoman. It's just typical male single-sex-school gentlemen's club assumption that women aren't people and don't have adventures and aren't your friend and aren't part of real life.

"Wayfarers ALL" not "Wayfarers Are."

Distinct hint of "Trespassers W." in that typo.

*sigh*
