Faith and the Lesbian Subtext

heres_luck and I have been exploring the BtVS Season 3 DVD, and watched Doug Petrie's commentary track for "Bad Girls," which has many enchanting moments--at least two of which are him burbling about the lesbian subtext between Buffy and Faith.
And then tonight us and MH and some other people watched "Five by Five" (Angel 1.18), and lo and behold, there's some more lesbian subtext around Faith, except the woman playing Lilah (not an Angel fan, so don't know her name) delivers the lines straight. *weeps* Eliza Dushku's doing everything but practically Frenching her, and the woman can't even work her way up as far as "vague innuendo"--much less "sultry," which is what the dialogue is crying out for. Dushku's left doing that subtextual tango all by herself.
And that's a pity, because given the right dance partner, Dushku can show you just why the tango is the dance of seduction. She and Gellar prove that in Season 3.
I hate seeing good subtext wasted.

Date: 2003-01-13 05:32 am (UTC)I thought about your reply for a while, and realized why it looks like we're responding to two completely different performances. My comments were based almost entirely on her voice. This is a me-thing, probably having to do with not being able to see for shit. I always go for voice first. So, whatever she was doing with eyes/face/body (and I'm willing to believe she was doing a lot), her voice was not interested.
But, yeah, Eliza Dushku and her eyeliner. *fans self*

The dialogue is screaming double entendre and lesbian subtext, especially with that very specific shift in gender from Faith's, "you don't know how many men have promised me that" (emphasis added), to Lilah's promise of satisfaction. If this were a novel, we'd all know exactly what Lilah was doing. It's only in the performance--and, as Kita pointed out, not necessarily all of the performance--that the subtext gets flattened out into nothing.
Behold the English major. Wind her up, and away she goes. *g*
