truepenny: artist's rendering of Sidneyia inexpectans (hamlet)

I just emailed my dissertation committee to say I want to defend next semester.

I must be out of my ever-lovin' blue-eyed mind.

I always wondered--

How about porpentines?

Julius Caesar almost certainly didn't. Italians tend to be brown-eyed.

Northern or southern Italians? There's a fair number of blond, blue-eyed types from the calf end of the boot.

Well, Rome's sort of in the middle: north of Naples but south of Perugia. And presumably the reason for the blond-haired blue-eyed Italians in the south is that Southern Italy used to be ruled by Normans. But Julius Caesar lived long, long before the Normans came.

Yes, yes you are. And we admire you for it!

"Don't worry" is right up there with "duck and cover" in the list of pointless phrases, but you will in fact do great.

(A professor of mine had a cartoon on his door of a candidate punching a committee member in the jaw. The other two are saying to each other, "Excellent defense. Let's give her the doctorate." So hey, maybe you can go armed with special porpentine quills.)

The semseter starts in late August and ends just before Christmas. But to be in line for degree conferral in December probably means I've got other hoops I've got to jump through and an earlier deadline for at least some of this. I don't know about that part, because I haven't been willing to think about it.

One step at a time.
*deep breath*
