Chapter Nine of emperor is finished, clocking in at 2,492 words. And I know what happens next; I just need a transition.

I hate transitions. I hate them in my academic writing, and I hate them in my fiction. I've gotten better at them with practice, but that's not the same as being able to toss them off lightly, tra-la. They are the bane of my existence.

Going to stop typing and rest hands now.

I hate transitions too. I was therefore very impressed with Jon Courtenay Grimwood's approach to the problem, as demonstrated in his Arabesk trilogy (Pashazade, Effendi and Felaheen). Basically he just doesn't bother to transish, he just jumps. Some of the leaps were quite prodigious, yet they worked for me. I made a mental note to bear the technique in mind next time I'm stuck at a transition.
