The introduction to my dissertation (which introduction, I might add, is not finished), is fifty-five pages long. (12,000 words, if that's a better measurement for you.)

I am torn between incredulity, pride, and stark gibbering terror.

Gulp. Damn, that's a lot of words. So, how long is a dissertation (the whole thing, not just the intro) supposed to be?

That's not an introduction, that's Chapter Zero. Wow. Does "not finished" indicate primarily the addition of more text or the paring down of extant text?

I'm still adding.

Some of it probably needs to be pared, but I can't figure out what until it's actually all there.

I hadn't realized how complicated my project was until I had to sit down and really explain it.

I'm torn between jealousy and utter disbelief! 12,000 words and counting, and I'll be lucky if I scrape 10,000.

Re. the discussion about length--my Uni gives the acceptable length for a PhD thesis as between 60,000 and 100,000 words. Most of us aim for about 80,000...
