I love russet apples. Every autumn they appear - brown-skinned, almost soft, with a peculiar flavour all their own - and I buy them, especially the small ones, and eat with rapture. They're seasonal, unlike the perpetual Granny Smiths and Golden Deliciouses.
The first time I stayed in France I saw giant russet apples on a stall and bought one ... to discover that they tasted of nothing much at all.
Actually, they taste pretty much like their name, a delicate, sweet, gold flavor (as opposed to Gravensteins, which I've been eating for the past couple weeks, which are strong and tart and green).
