You know, somewhere there's a dissertation being written on the semantics or semiotics of LJ icons.
I use mine as a sort of calling card -- you see the pika (see? see the pika? see the pika, love the pika, be the pika), you know it's me.
Whereas you use yours to provide post-theme hints, mood hints, and probably some other hints I'm not coming up with, and your icons are intertextual in a way that mine isn't.
(Though "pika" is my answer to the first question everybody asks after reading Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series. So there's an extremely limited intertextual bit there.)
