You know, that was about the waffliest answer to a trivia question I believe I've ever seen. I'm gonna go with "graveyard" and leave it at that. I will be shocked if any of my committee calls me on it, and, hey, if they do, then I'll have my answer. :)
I thought in the original it was a regular cemetary and they only moved the headstones and they expanded on this concept in the sequel to include an Indian Burial Ground. But all of that is very fuzzy in my head.
Yeah. And I couldn't quite sort out in my head if the Indian burial ground was Poltergeist or The Amityville Horror. Hence the posting of the question.
My memory of the end of Poltergeist, which I haven't seen in donkey's years, is that the developers had "relocated" the cemetery by moving the headstones--I have this bizarrely vivid memory of Craig T. Nelson yelling about it in the rain. But then there was that vague Indian burial ground association floating through my head.
This is hilarious because my husband and I were having this very same conversation just a couple of days ago when Poltergeist was on tv. I was asking him if the community had been built over an Indian burial ground and he said no because it wouldn't make sense that the dead people popping up at the end were wearing pearls and had like business suits on. We decided that the Indian burial thing was introduced in subsequent movies. Also, we talked about the Poltergeist "curse." Both daughters died tragically. Anyway, saw this in f2 and had to respond. :)
You seem to have reached a satisfying working answer to your dissertation needs re: this question, but, because I can, I offer the following from a sumarry of the movie (http://www.tvguide.com/Movies/database/showmovie.asp?MI=10883) in the tvguide.com Cinebooks database (http://www.tvguide.com/movies/database/)*:
"Enter clairvoyant Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein), who surmises that the subdivision was built on a sacred Indian burial ground and that the gods aren't happy."
*The older entries in this database are heavily based on a long-time print resource that is generally considered reputable. Comparing the print and online Poltergeist entries, I was amused to see that one of the edits made by the online database was to remove a bit of Spielberg bashing from the beginning. Fun with reference tools.

It's all very confusing.
