This is how it works.
I hear a piece of good news about a person whom I know, like, and respect, and my first thought is, How DARE they do better than me?
It is, mercifully, a completely internal reaction, and I can simultaneously be sincerely overjoyed for the person in question, but the madly savage mink which is my competitiveness is crouched there in that dark back corner of my brain, teeth bared and little red eyes glowing.
It's part of my nature. I neither admire nor condone it, but it doesn't care.
And it'll bite me if I get too close.

elisem, who has ALSO had good news today and is also a person I know, like, and respect. It was an RL thing and not even about fiction writing.
Elise, if you felt or wondered or worried that I meant you, I apologize for it. I did not mean you. All other considerations aside, I would never have written about you that way. Also, truly, it would have taken a warp in the space-time continuum, since your post was made after mine, but I don't feel that that exonerates me or makes this apology unnecessary. So, I'm sorry if my post was in any way hurtful, unintentional though that hurt would have been.
