5.mirrorthaw and I went to a Jeffrey Foucault show last night. The music was excellent as always, and the stand-out moment of the evening was a surprise reading by David James Duncan, who is a friend of Mr. Foucault's. He read "Cherish this Ecstasy," which was published in The Sun Magazine and reprinted in The Best American Essays 2009, edited by Mary Oliver (whose poem "What Is There Beyond Knowing" heresluck serendipitously posted on Monday). It was a gorgeous essay about ornithology and the numinous, and he read it just breath-takingly well. And it was a completely unexpected gift.
