1. I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but today I am, by god, a J. K. Rowling fan.

2. Odyssey Con X is this weekend. Tobias S. Buckell, Harry Turtledove, and Monte Cook are the Guests of Honor.

3. I, too, will be at OddCon:

Friday, April 16, 4:30 P.M.: Novel Writing Q&A: Sarah Monette (M), Alex Bledsoe
Saturday, April 17, 10:00 A.M.: Baseball, Fantasy, and SF: James Frenkel (M), Harry Turtledove, Sarah Monette, Steven H. Silver
Sunday, April 18, 11:30 A.M.: But I wouldn't want to live there!: Richard Chwedyk (M), Bethany Nelson, Sarah Monette, Jason Hardy
Sunday, April 18, 1:00 P.M.: Nonhuman & Other Human Protagonists: Kathy Sullivan (M), Tobias Buckell, Harry Turtledove, Alex Bledsoe, Sarah Monette

Addenda: (1) Unless I am about to be late to a panel (or, you know, obviously really busy just then), I am always happy to sign books.
(2) I am very shy and very near-sighted. But that doesn't mean I won't be delighted to talk to you!

4. I will also be at Wiscon, doing a reading (with [livejournal.com profile] pameladean, [livejournal.com profile] anghara, and [livejournal.com profile] yuki_onna-in-absentia) and a panel. And the Sign Out.

5. [livejournal.com profile] mirrorthaw and I went to a Jeffrey Foucault show last night. The music was excellent as always, and the stand-out moment of the evening was a surprise reading by David James Duncan, who is a friend of Mr. Foucault's. He read "Cherish this Ecstasy," which was published in The Sun Magazine and reprinted in The Best American Essays 2009, edited by Mary Oliver (whose poem "What Is There Beyond Knowing" [livejournal.com profile] heresluck serendipitously posted on Monday). It was a gorgeous essay about ornithology and the numinous, and he read it just breath-takingly well. And it was a completely unexpected gift.

Rowling's article was wonderful, but some of the comments on the first page made me want to scream. This is why I should probably stop reading comments on news websites.

Thanks for the link to the JK article. Comments on it were a bit depressing, though.

There's a reason I never read comments on anything more high-traffic than my friends' LJs.

I don't think I've ever seen *anything* that implies that Rowling is not a person I'd like and respect if I knew her. WHIch is pretty astounding for someone in the news that much.

Lovely article, awful comments, I should have kept that link to the gadget that promised to give you the ability to hide all comments everywhere unless you specifically turn them on. (Might have been on Lifehacker, somewhere... worth hunting for I suppose.) And while I'm not from the U.K., I recall the same sentiments being common over here too during the nineties -- single parents mothers being the source of all evil and worthless beings all around. It's as if 'they' need to have somebody to pick on, though these days it seems to be the immigrants who bear the brunt of it rather than the single moms.

I'm not sure whether it's comforting or really depressing how much conservatives on one side of the pond look like conservatives on the other. Because, yeah.

geek fail on my part for not trying to find other Odd-Con 10 attendees prior to the event itself..
sadly, I would not have been able to have gone to any of your panels, as most were scheduled at the same exact time as the ones I was on.

I hope that you enjoyed the convention
