Haven't had much to say for myself this past week. Of course, after me going on ad nauseum about my dissertation for weeks on end, y'all are probably grateful for a rest.

I keep hoping that I'll come up with something to say about a book--my book, someone else's book, any book--but so far no joy.

Dreams have been all anxiety-related and weird, and I'm playing too much mahjongg.

And I haven't been commenting in other people's journals when I ought. So, [livejournal.com profile] redbird, good luck on the job front. [livejournal.com profile] elisem, I'm glad you're home safe. [livejournal.com profile] scarcrest, I feel your Cub-pain. (Stupid Cubs.) [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr, go you with the word count! Any words are better than no words at all.

And I'm with [livejournal.com profile] matociquala: I don't want Shrub approving of my life. The reasons Mirrorthaw and I legalized and formalized our marriage have nothing to do with morality and everything to do with commitment. And making a commitment to another person because you love them is something that should be honored regardless of sex, gender, race, class, or any other variable I can think of, including the number of people involved.

Have you heard, the word is Love?

Ah, but you did bring joy, with your comment to me this morning.

Thanks ... If I were Mr. Bartman, I'd be moving to Miami right about now.

Agreed with your thoughts on marriage. I highly doubt I'll ever get married, but if I did, it would be to show my commitment to the woman in question, not to appease God or people's conventional sense of morality.

I'm reminded of, I think, Thomas Jefferson's comment about religion: How it didn't matter to him whether another person believed in 100 gods or none, because it didn't break his back or steal his land either way. A person's sexual preference doesn't harm anyone, unless the person is a predator. As long as everyone's consenting, the Religious Reich should shut the fuck up.

If we wanted to really "protect marriage," we'd change our culture so that you didn't have 16-year-old girls marrying their 18-year-old boyfriends so they could have sex without fear of hellfire. We'd have real sex education so the shotgun wedding would be an anachronism.

I wonder if we shold all file for divorce on the first day of the week if he does this crap again next year.

I mean, not like we'd have to follow through. But that would be a great protest.....
