I'm back. I think. Or at least I have something to say.

Dissertation defense is Tuesday, November 4th, 10 a.m. CST.

I'm not nearly as nervous about it as I probably should be.

My dissertation director has been encouraging me to take the first ten minutes to talk about "The Project," and I finally emailed her today to say, No, I have nothing to say and no need to say it. I'm completely unfazed by the balance of power inherent in being in a room with five professors grilling me like St. Thingummy on the gridiron. My own blasé attitude is worrying me a little, but not enough that I feel compelled to work myself into a state over it. I need to convince myself to read over the dissertation again this weekend, so that I have some vague idea of what I actually said, but I'm not sure I can be bothered.

I'm over this fucking thing.

In other news, I'll have a flash piece, "Queen of Swords," up at AlienSkin for the month of November, and "Sidhe Tigers" (which if you put a knife to my throat, I'd call a prose poem) will be appearing in Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet 13.

Sidhe Tigers, the necklace, is the work of [livejournal.com profile] elisem. Give her a round of applause, Gentle Readers. She's brilliant.

It sounds to me as if you have reached that perfect state:

apathy.

And a good state it is.

I was made aware of it when I was accused by a Senior Vice President that I didn't seem sufficiently panic-stricken. I said "I'm beyond panic." She responded: "What is beyond panic?" and I replied "apathy."

It is a fine, fine place to be. You will go in, wow them, and emerge with Magick Initials after your name. And well-deserved ones at that.

Good luck to you--and I'm sure you'll do well. I'll be thinking of you.

As I shall be at work at the time, I shall make sacrifice unto Mighty Plush Cthulhu on your behalf.

Suggestions for an appropriate sacrifice? Something with lots of blood, obviously, but what?

That sounds like a dandy attitude. They're just guys doing stuff. And you've done stuff too. I'll be thinking of you on Tuesday.

One round of applause for [livejournal.com profile] elisem, and another for [livejournal.com profile] truepenny, both for the two publications and for the Dis.

At the risk of embarrassing you, dear [livejournal.com profile] truepenny, I cannot resist posting the photo (http://dd-b.lighthunters.net/picpage.cgi/gallery/Elise's%20Jewelry%20on%20Sarah/ddb%2020030421%20800-40.jpg) DDB took of you wearing the necklace in question. (I'm sorry the link is so wide, but I do not know how to shorten them.)

Possibly there's a Point of No Return where the flutterings and jitterings cease. (This may be another version of 'when a man is to be hanged in a fortnight...')
Very best of wishes for the defence: if I can work out the time differential I'll be thinking of you.

Right. 4pm. Noted. Will think supportive thoughts.

I'm sure it will go swimmingly.

Have marked my calendar. You share the date with the Philadelphia mayoral election between John Street and Sam Katz.

And Street won, so!

Truepenny, I just saw this. I hope it went quite well, and I'm glad you're closer to being done-done-done with this.
