Because I really do think better when I write things down.

And if I write them down here--as [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr was saying recently--the knowledge that other people know that these are things I ought to be doing just might possibly guilt me into doing them.

It's worth a shot anyway.

So.

On the dissertatorial front, I need to:

1. Clean up the ms as it stands.

2. Go to the library and do more reading. (And look! says Sam. More lembas bread!)

3. Email my committee and ask them to remind me who wanted to see revisions of what.

4. Get the hang of this fucking "critical dialogue" nonsense. [There's a rant that could go here about my committee giving the distinct impression they consider me a left-handed backwards stepchild for not knowing how to do something no one ever bothered to teach me how to do, but I'm not going to waste the energy.]

The fiction side of things ... *sigh*

I really can't let myself work on Kekropia until the dis is done. Because I will only get sulkier and more mulish about working on anything that isn't the novel, and that's not going to help. Working on short stories is at least marginally more acceptable (and if I try to go cold turkey off the fiction writing, things are going to go pear-shaped in a hurry), and I've got a couple half-finished ones right now. One of which is that damned necklace story that keeps rolling up like a hedgehog when I poke at it. But the other one is at least willing to play ball.

*wanders off to do some more writing*

I gotta go to the library tomorrow. As a proto-librarian, I really shouldn't dread it this much...

Wanna do lunch? One-ish?

For the hedgehog story, would a flamingo help?

Courage: some of the folks I get to give technical review get to the point of this huge formal research and writing project (dissertation) without having had to do any cited-and-referenced research work (at least in their grad school courses...) and the charming APA, Chicago or MLA are opaque to them (especially the ones who sort of glance at it and neglect to use it, and these are not as rare as one might wish)... and this stage is part of why my part as a dissertation editor feels like a midwifery practice; you do all this work and then there's always (even the absolute cleanest!) Something More - and there's that "third hour of labor and I'm just ready to have been Done now, okay?" stage you're getting to: and again I say Courage and it will have been worth doing all of this.

This is of course the fussiest kind of writing and formatting anyone ever does, and if you have a picky committee, bless them and be happy (um, yeah: more lembas bread, all rightie...yippity).

Oh, it's not the formatting. I can handle MLA well enough. It's how to talk about them.
