It's something to do with the way text looks on-screen, but since my eyesight is so bad I can't actually see it, I take it on faith alone that it matters.
Perhaps (she says hopefully) one of the people who DO know will be kind enough to speak up and explain.
It's what makes text (particularly letterforms with curving lines) look smooth rather than pixellated and jagged. In the case of white text on a black background, it works by turning some of the pixels around a letter from black to various shades of gray.
