[livejournal.com profile] matociquala has had an epiphany of interest to those who are (a.) fans of Roger Zelazny, (b.) fans of Man from UNCLE, and (c.) interested in how writers' minds work (Zelazny's if you buy her theory, and Bear's even if you don't *g*).

Which epiphany has reminded me tangentially that we said something really smart about Amber during the language and fantasy panel at Minicon, but I can't quite remember what. I know it was something about noir and narrators, but I can't dredge the actual content out of the sludge. Anyone who was on/at that panel, can you help me out?

Oh, man, it's on the tip of my tongue.

Argh. Was this in the context of the discussion of how you cue the reader that certain uses of language are okay in the context of what you're doing? My memory is being blocked by the fact that Leguin's essay almost always gets brought up on such panels, and she decried Zelazny's mixture of archaic and very contemporary language, but I don't think we actually got to him from that direction. Meh.

We did have a piece of discussion centering around Speaking Forsoothly, but that wasn't where Amber came up.

I know I invoked Raymond Chandler, but I can't remember why.
