I have an article up at Reflection's Edge.

Dreamed last night that Cthulhu was living in our attic.

992 words thus far on Chapter Eleven of Kekropia (that's the tail end of Sunday night, all of yesterday, and a sentence written this morning). For once I actually have a little momentum coming off the end of a chapter.

You know, it's really hard living with a cat who is slowly dying of cancer. Especially when you love him.

[livejournal.com profile] matociquala has something to say that I think is worth hearing.

There are a lot of reasons to be displeased with FOX as a network. But Firefly and Wonderfalls are my personal top two.

After an Unfortunate Incident with my Sheaffer last night, my hands look like I'm turning into a Holstein.

Was Cthulhu a good house-guest, or did he use all the hot water and leave wet towels laying about?

Kitty. :(

That is indeed a hard thing. Hugs and cat-skritches enclosed for all as need 'em.

Your Cthulhu dream made me smile. And I agree totally on Wonderfalls. (I haven't seen more than an episode or two of Firefly yet, so I can't say, there.)

And now I am daydreaming about patterned ink.

(((Cat, Truepenny)))

I really liked the article. I was much, perhaps overly, struck with a remark that Bertie MacAvoy made on a panel during the Brighton Worldcon in 1987. She said, "To write like Tolkien without having been Tolkien is to write badly." It seems to me that you have beautifully explicated why and how this is true. I hope everybody listens, including me.

I am afraid that I bounced off "Wonderfalls." The pacing and the way the music and so on came down hard on the comedic elements really annoyed me.

I've written four and a half fantasy novels, none of which are quests, and I think you're absolutely right about what to emulate in Tolkien.

And sympathy about the cat. I've done it with people, which is even worse because you don't get to decide when it's too much for everyone.

I enjoyed the article. You managed to get a handle on how I feel about Tolkien and his imitators.

Many sympathies for the dying cat. I've gone through that recently with one of ours, though in her case the lymphoma was very aggressive and there wasn't a very long wait. Very hard indeed. I'll be thinking of you and your cat. I hope he's not in too much pain.

I'm sorry to hear about the cat. I would have liked more time to say goodbye to my dog, but not too much time. Stupid death anyway.

The article rocks; I'm so glad you've found a way to get those ideas to a wider audience. Now when are you going to do the one about the evolution from pastoral to Dickens? *g*
