Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] cavlec for pointing me at The Silmarillion in 1,000 Words.

Way down in a comment thread, there's a narrative version which I like at least as much.

AINULINDALE: God said 'let there be dudes', and there were dudes, and they sang together and it made the world, but the coolest dude of all got stinky and tried to sing his own stuff, and it sucked, and he got kicked out and he's the source of all bad things. The end.

Vaguely reminds me of the Skinhead Hamlet, and also of [livejournal.com profile] eye_of_a_cat's marvellous plot summaries (she's in gothic). I would love to read a summary of Paradise Lost written in that vein.

YES! I read that years and years ago at my aunt's (who used to teach English Lit at the Hebrew U), it must have been when I was fifteen. Thank you so much for reminding me of it, I'll try to hunt down a copy.

The editor + contributors also did similar books on poetry, biographies, and opera.

Some of us have overdrafts that aren't meant to be increasing, you know.

If you want to bankrupt me completely, send me to Amazon.co.uk links, I'm in Scotland. I might manage to resist temptation in the space between seeing the Amazon.com link and finding the same book on Amazon.co.uk.

I may be mischeivious, but I'm not evil. You'll have to find the links yourself. (And I suspect you'll find more books by the same crew that haven't made it across the Puddle.)
