truepenny: artist's rendering of Sidneyia inexpectans (catfish)

after a long hiatus

Back home, and back online.

We went to Los Angeles (via train, which was lovely except for FOUR HOUR delays both going and returning) for Mirrorthaw's sister's ordination as a deacon. I feared Los Angeles, but it did not devour me.

Trip highlight: The Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, which had an amazing exhibit on jellyfish, an octopus which was totally showing off for the visitors, undulating herself back and forth across the front of her tank, and tanks outdoors where they let you pet stingrays (they feel very odd, soft and slick and velvety). I was seven years old and incredibly happy all afternoon.

Now, returned home and contemplating my editorial letter on Kekropia, which is going to be titled something else. Work to do, hi-ho.

ETA: I'm not even going to pretend I can catch up on ten days' worth of LiveJournal. So, you know, if I've missed something important, please post a comment.

Octopuses and cuttlefish are quite amazing when you get to meet them. I went to an aquarium that sounds somewhat like the one you went to, a few years ago, and my most vivid memory is the cuttlefish in the touchtank, that not only showed off to visitors, it actually seemed to like being petted by five-year olds.

I'm glad to see that you liked the Aquarium. A hs friend works there; it opened after I moved out of the area, but I've been curious.
