truepenny: artist's rendering of Sidneyia inexpectans (mfu: ns-wetcat)

My dreams last night ran the gamut, from trying to explain to somebody how David Eddings is a lazy writer, to writing an lj post about a dream I'd had earlier in the night, which itself was The Lord of the Rings with The Flying Dutchman added in.

That dream also proved that my subconscious does not accept Ian Holm as Bilbo. Ian McKellen is Gandalf, sure enough. Elijah Wood is Frodo, and Orlando Bloom is Legolas (although Arod was represented by a plushie horse Legolas carried with him). But Bilbo was not Ian Holm. Bilbo was the Rankin/Bass Bilbo, which I loathe, but which apparently I imprinted on as a small child and am now stuck with. I have the same problem with Sam (who gets no love on Google--no hideous Rankin/Bass Sam images for us!), no matter how much I love Sean Astin's performance. Something in the dark recesses of my brain just won't accept him.

Whatever it is, I really wish it would get the memo.

No nightmares, anyway, which is something. I woke up with menstrual cramps, but [livejournal.com profile] oursin has managed to make me feel better even about that.

Virtu-wise, I got myself from Chapter 12 to Chapter 14 yesterday, but Chapter 14 is where everything gang aft agley, so we may be here for quite some time. Don't wait up.

Ooooh, yes! That's very pleasing.

... I got myself from Chapter 12 to Chapter 14 yesterday, but Chapter 14 is where everything gang aft agley,...

I can't help reading this as implying that you were hoping to outwit inevitability by skipping Chapter 13; inevitability is not so easily thwarted!

What about the Bakshi Bilbo?

The only thing I liked about the Bakshi was the way he animated the Nazgul. They were cool.

There are some Sam images here: http://www.cedmagic.com/featured/tolkien/return-of-the-king.html

Rankin and Bass apparently cast Jimmy Durante for the role.

Now That's Just Wrong--though I suppose not as wrong as it could be. But Bilbo sitting at a piano with his hat shoved back off his forehead . . ? No.

Clearly I googled badly.

And that's interesting, because apparently the image I actually have in my head for Sam is Merry (http://www.cedmagic.com/featured/tolkien/rotk-1-2411-merry-waits.jpg).

Huh.

Elephant? What elephant?

You just asked too specific a question :)

In that picture, Merry looks like Jimmy Durante, too.

I think it's the images from the Brothers Hildebrandt calendars that have stuck in my head the most strongly. I don't remember any of them very clearly (I have a very poor visual memory for anything that's not moving), but the sort of vague shape of Tolkien imagery in my head connects to those pictures rather than to anything else.

Eddings

David Eddings is a lazy writer, isn't he? He wrote one halfway decent book and now recycles it ad infinitum. Sadly, I would have to put Tad Williams in the same category.

I'm actually reading The War of the Flowers right now and finding it quite unlike his other work and very inventive.

We'll see if he screws up the ending, though.

That's true, he did strike out in a new direction with that one. I'd be interested to hear what you think of the end when you get there.
