This draft of The Virtu is done.

(No, I don't know which draft it is; I have completely and utterly lost count. How many holes does it take to fill the Albert Hall? Let's call it n-2 where n = the final draft. That's probably not right either, but it's good enough for government work, and this isn't even a government.)

I have absolutely no fucking idea whether the thing's any good or not. Hell, I don't even know if it makes sense. All I've got at the moment is that it's DONE.

Provisonally.

(One of the nicest things about having a book actually published is that you can't screw around with it any more. Yes, there are things about Mélusine I'd do differently now, but you know what? I can't. I can't second guess myself anymore and fret and whinge and wring my hands and change one word sixteen times. And that is a relief like unto no other.)

But in any event, I don't get to worry at The Virtu anymore until my victims beta readers have had a chance to read it and tell me what still needs fixing. And that's not perfect, but it's good enough to get by on.

Some writers do revise finished work, you know.

See, for example, Michael F. Flynn's In the Country of the Blind. In the magazine version (1987) and the first book version (1990), Flynn overestimated the Soviet Union's power and influence during the 21st Century. Since the book's Big Idea was that the future can be accurately forecast (with 19th-century technology and knowledge), this may have embarrassed the writer.

The 2003 edition corrects this.

I know, I know. Feels like forever.

From my end, it feels like a freaking microsecond.
